Solomon's tale; dysfunctionally wise
Solomon's tale; dysfunctionally wise
Like King Solomon, the wisest man that has ever walked the surface of the earth. I'd choose wisdom any day over wealth because we all know in wisdom one can acquire all the wealth he desires just like Solomon did.Solomon, son of King David and Bathsheba was born after the death of the child produced by their affair. He was named "Jedidiah" beloved of God or Solomon. A beautiful baby boy born into a life he never really asked for. Growing up having servants tend to his every need and practically worshiping him like a demigod, this were just the highlights of the life of being a son of the King.
Solomon's childhood wasn't exactly the kind he loved, growing up and hearing the palace guards gossip about how his mother and father had an affair, and his father plotted and kill his mother's first husband, having to witness his two older brothers Ammon and Absalom hate each other because Ammon committed an atrocity of raping his step sister, Tamar. As if it wasn't bad enough, his father did nothing about it and the hatred in Absalom's heart grew to a level of him killing Ammon and also attempting a coup to kill their father which eventually led to Absalom's death. What a terrible childhood he had, most nights he will stay up and stare into air and be so angry at the kind of family he was born into and he will sit there and make inner vows, telling himself " I will never be like my father, I'm sure all this is happening because he committed adultery and murder."
Few years later, The king falls really ill and a young virgin Abishag is sort for the king to warm his bed and care for him but the king is too ill to enjoy the company of a woman, as his health condition gets worse he declares his youngest son,Solomon as the next king. Adonijah the older son already starts to parade himself as king before this declaration is made and the moment he hears of his fathers decision, he gets really angry and starts to plot another coup.
Solomon is anointed as king and his first trail is when his older brother Adonijah, who is endlessly plotting and scheming to sit on the throne uses Bathsheba to ask Solomon to allow him marry their late father's concubine Abishag (1kings.2:12-25).
But Solomon is wise enough to see that this request is done as an act for Adonijah to have a better claim to the throne; as according to laws it is forbidden for a commoner to take a kings possession and anyone who does that shows a declaration of right to the throne.
Solomon goes to God and asks for wisdom to know to handle plot twists as this, if they come his way. He asks for wisdom to rule and be able to tell the difference between right and wrong, wisdom to be better than his father and not give his own children the kind of childhood he had, he promised he will follow through to God's word and be a way better king. God grants him so much wisdom and knowledge. His reign becomes the most successful as he acquired amass wealth, his alliance with many nations and his fame spreads across nations bringing kings, princes, philosophers and teachers to sit and drink from his well of wisdom.
So basically one can say Solomon's request for wisdom was to change everything he had come to know and be a better king; which he did, he built and built and changed everything about his kingdom he made his kingdom one of the richest places in the world.
But everything came crumbling when he started to marry foreign women and allow idol worship, he had so much wisdom and power that he made the guineas book of records as the man with the most number of wives and concubines. 300 wives and 700concubines, where was his inner vow about not being an adulterer like his father? He even became worse than his father.
Solomon authored many books, the book of proverbs is filled with counsel on how to follow the lord and his to chase wisdom and act in it, the songs of Solomon book represents a beautiful picture of what Gods intended the relationship between himself and man to be but through the poetry of a man and his lover. So king Solomon knew what was right but he didn't follow the right path, he forgot all his wise counsel and the wisdom of scriptures and fell deep into the sin grave dug by his 1000women.
Somewhere before all the multiple lovers, vast wisdom, scandals, poor relationships between his brothers, rape of his sister by his own brother, murder and all the drama, laid a child who looked wide eyed at strangers hoping for a place of solace, someone who could make him feel safe again not a child with a dented upbringing and a dysfunctional family. All the wealth, wisdom and women but He cracked open in his book of ecclesiastics where he describes life as vanity and all his wisdom a waste. He finally learnt what the most important thing was ; to respect God and obey his commands, because he knows about everything, even the secret things. He knows about all the good and all the bad.
(Ecc. 12:13-14)
Solomon was depressed as he wrote the book of ecclesiastics, where he described how he sought for happiness in everything but couldn't find it; not in all his wisdom, not in all the hard work, not in having fun, Feasting, drinking and having chains of women. He finally understood that his late night sessions of making vows to be better than his father wasn't the way out and since God knew this was an issue all he needed to do was ask God to take charge of this problem and help him to live like an upright man above the flaws of his father. For God had all the wisdom and will refix everything if he asked him to.
Most of us like Solomon, grew up and found some certain traits in our parents and our environments or maybe from the experiences we had and we resolved to making vows to never becoming those things or let those past experiences happen to us again, but making this inner vows only tells God that you have the power to live above those traits and experiences. We all know what happens when we decided to live by our own power,we fail. Let us renounce these vows and open these areas of our lives to God and ask him to take control for he has all the wisdom and he alone can help refix our life's and help us drop those traits so they don't get handed over to the next generation.
"I learned that anything God does will continue forever. People cannot add anything to the work of God, and they cannot take anything away from it. God did this so that people would respect him. What happened in the past has happened, and what will happen in the future will happen. But God wants to help those who have been treated badly."
Ecclesiastes 3:14-15 ERV
Great write-up as always!
